Meet Wanda ChernenkoWanda is a resident at the Edgewood Village community in Bismarck, North Dakota, where Legacy Medical provides on-site primary care and ongoing support for residents.
She was a Registered Nurse for more than 45 years, serving across multiple specialties including surgery, obstetrics, emergency medicine, infection control, quality assurance, and as a nursing supervisor. Her career took her across the country, from Idaho to Georgia, always centered around one thing: caring for people.
She was educated at Trinity College and often jokes about how she found her way into nursing:
“There were three things a woman could be at that time a nurse, a nun, or a teacher… so I chose nurse.”
What started as a simple decision became a lifelong commitment to others.
One moment has stayed with Wanda throughout her life.
A young man was admitted after a serious car accident. Wanda cared for him for over a month, building a connection with both him and his family. She was deeply invested in his recovery.
He was eventually transferred to another hospital, where he later passed away.
Not long after, Wanda received a card from his family thanking her for being “his favorite nurse.”
She has never forgotten that.
Because to her, care has never been just about treatment or clinical skill. It is about connection.
When asked what makes a great nurse, Wanda’s answer was simple:
“Caring about other people.”
It sounds straightforward, but anyone who has experienced healthcare knows it is not always guaranteed.
She recalls working in a Catholic hospital in Nevada, where if patients could not afford a ride home or a meal after discharge, the nuns would step in driving them home, buying them food, and making sure they were okay.
That kind of care stays with you. And it shapes what you expect when you are the one receiving it.
