Medicare and Medicaid…aren’t they the same thing?

Understanding Medicare and Medicaid can feel confusing. But it’s important to understand both programs when making decisions about care.

We hear it all the time.

“Will this be covered?”
“Do I need both?”
“Can I still be seen if this isn’t finalized yet?”

The good news is, it does not have to be complicated.

Contact us to verify benefits

At Legacy Medical, our providers are credentialed with both Medicare and Medicaid. That means your visit is billed through your insurance just like it would be at an ER, urgent care, or specialist visit.

No separate system.
No extra hoops.
No “this works differently here” moment.

Whether you are seen by an in-home provider in a senior living community, at home, or in one of our clinics, coverage works the way you expect it to.

What This Means for Your Care

The difference between Medicare and Medicaid is not just technical. It directly impacts how and when care is delivered.

Medicare typically covers:

  • Primary care visits (including the visits patients receive from Legacy providers in their home, community, or clinic)
  • Preventive services
  • Routine check-ins for adults 65+
  • Specialist visits and hospital care

Medicaid, depending on eligibility, may cover:

  • Primary care visits (including the visits patients receive from Legacy providers in their home, community, or clinic)
  • Medications
  • Additional support services
  • Long-term care in certain situations

When patients are seen by a Legacy provider, whether in-home, in a community setting, or in clinic, these coverages work together to support consistent, accessible care.

Real-Life Scenarios

Sometimes the easiest way to understand coverage is to see how it plays out.

Mary, 68

Mary has Medicare and sees a Legacy provider regularly in her senior living community. Her routine visits and preventive care are covered, allowing her to stay on top of her health without needing to leave her home.

John, 74

John requires more ongoing support and qualifies for Medicaid. His coverage helps support his care needs, including services that go beyond what Medicare alone would cover.

Linda, 72

Linda has both Medicare and Medicaid. This means she has “Dual Eligibility, or Dual Coverage.” Medicare covers her primary care visits, while Medicaid helps with additional costs like copays and medications. Both programs work together to reduce the out-of-pocket costs for Linda.

What We See as Providers

From a provider perspective, coverage clarity makes a big difference in how quickly and confidently care can be delivered.

We often see:

  • Coverage gaps that delay care decisions
  • Confusion between Medicare and Medicaid roles
  • Patients wait until a health event happens before confirming coverage

One of the most common situations we see is when patients or families assume Medicaid will be approved, but it has not yet been finalized. Coverage should be active before care begins to avoid delays or unexpected costs.

At Legacy Medical, we want to make sure everything is taken care of before care begins so there are no surprises for patients or families.

Why This Matters

When coverage is clearly understood:

  • Care can start sooner
  • Decisions feel less stressful and reactive
  • Patients and families feel more confident
  • Providers can focus on delivering care, not navigating uncertainty

Whether care is happening in a senior living community, at home, or in a clinic, having the right coverage in place helps everything run more smoothly.

A Simpler Way Forward

Medicare and Medicaid are different, but they work toward the same goal: helping patients access the care they need.

At Legacy Medical, we are here to help make that process feel straightforward. From verifying coverage to delivering care in the most convenient setting, our focus is on removing barriers so patients can focus on their health.

Because when coverage is clear from the start, patients and families can spend less time worrying about logistics and more time focusing on care.
